The boonie hat was developed for the US military during the war in Vietnam and is somewhat similar to a bucket hat but includes a stiffer brim and a band of branch loops that allow easy camouflage by the insertion of branches. A strap allows use in high winds without loss. It is very similar to the Australian bush hat used by the Australian Army since WWI. The jungle hat generally has a smaller and more downward angled brim than the boonie.
Boonies offer better sun protection in the tropics because the wider brim extends 360 degrees around the crown. They are often referred to as sun hats for that reason. Insignia is usually fastened to the front of the crown above the branch loops. The original jungle hat included a mosquito net and was made of tiger stripe camouflage that was often salvaged from other uniform items.
Boonies are still in use by all branches of the US military today in Iraq and Afghanistan. The design of the boonie hat is so sensible it has made its way into general fashion use and is often worn by civilians for camping, fishing, golfing, and other outdoor activities.
Whether you need a woodland camo boonie or jungle hat with mosquito netting, a desert camo, city camo, sun hat, tiger, asian tiger, khaki, black, navy or olive, we've got a huge selection of boonie hats and jungle hats from the best makers at the right prices. Our military hats come from Propper, Rothco Ultra Force, and from vintage makers. If you want a boonie hat made in the US, to military specs or to GSA compliance you will find it at Patriot Surplus.
Patriot Surplus stocks both new and vintage Military Caps including combat caps, fatigue caps, polar fleece watch caps, and various patrol caps from Propper, Ultra Force, ACU Digital and other manufacturers. Caps come in a variety of colors and camo patterns with and without earflaps. Adjustable caps come in camo mesh and in various low profile styles. The utility and durability of military patrol caps make them a favorite not just of military personnel, but also of outdoor enthusiasts.
Different versions of military field caps and patrol caps have been used by the US military since its introduction during the Korean War as part of the uniform worn by US Army Rangers there. The original tightly woven cotton poplin design was wind resistant and had a fold down flannel flap to cover ears and the back of the head. The M1951 Field Cap was supplanted by the more rigid Ridgeway Cap during Vietnam but were reintroduced as BDU, ACU and ABU patrol caps as part of the Army Combat Uniform in 1981 and which come in M81 Woodland camo, six color desert camo, three color desert camo, and the universal camo pattern.
Summer models eliminate the ear flap. There's currently a version of the tigerstripe camo that is worn with USAF Airman's battle uniform. Most of these caps feature a velcro patch on the back for the soldier's name, an interior pocket, and sometimes are designed for insignia on the front. The introduction of the MultiCam pattern came in late 2010 for Afghanistan.
